Picturing Beer

Greetings, all you fine readers of A Tempest in a Tankard!

This post has nothing to do with beer and everything to do with beer. I’ve been meaning to update the layout of the site ever since, oh, 2013 when I started the blog. But somehow that long, rainy Sunday never materialized.

Recently, though, I added some security features to my site to protect all the work I’ve posted over the years. The software is now in what’s called “learning mode,” and during that time I’m supposed to do all sorts of things, including writing posts with photos (which I’m doing now), and changing the layout of the site. Apparently, if I don’t do all this stuff, the security software could wreak havoc on my desire to post even the simplest article.

You’ll notice the occasional changes over the coming weeks until I settle on a new design with functionalities I like. I’ll also be trying out different photos for the site’s banner, which gives me an excuse to post a few photos below. Let me know if you have any feedback about the photos or the design.

As always, thanks for reading!

    • Peter,

As always, thanks so much for the kind words! And thanks for the photos! I’d love to visit Machu Pichu someday. Apologies for the late response. I’ve been busy these past few weeks packing up for, flying to, and getting settling into another brief stint in Europe.

As for my posts, guilty as charged — sort of. A Europhile I most definitely am. My father emigrated from Switzerland and regaled me with many stories of the “old country” (as he called it) as I was growing up. I eventually went on to study European history and culture, and have enjoyed every minute of it. But Eurocentric I am not, for Eurocentrism is a mode of thinking that regards European culture as superior to other cultures. And that’s not me. My entire intellectual agenda and “life project,” if you will, has been dedicated to rejecting racism in all forms.

At any rate, I hope you don’t feel blindsided by the nature of this response. That was not my intention.

On a lighter note, here’s the main reason why I focus on Europe. An entire army of beer writers and bloggers is doing an admirable job of keeping us all abreast of the latest trends in New England IPAs, sour beers, barrel-aged beers, and fruited Goses. While they tend to that, I’ll keep reminding people that the current effervescence of all things “beer” in North America has more than a little to do with the history and culture of beer in the “old country.”

      Cheers!

    • Daegan, thanks for the feedback!

Like I mentioned in the post, I’d been meaning to change things ever since I got my blog started, but it got to a point where I had this nagging doubt that a change of template would throw off formatting for every post — and then inertia set in. It even got to the point a few years back when I noticed that I had an inordinate number of click-ins from Reddit and saw that some kind soul had mentioned A Tempest in a Tankard as a blog worth checking out — but also noted that the design was a bit dated. (Doh!).

As it were, I did have to reformat a few things here and there with the new setup — and still have a few minor things to do. I’m also not super nuts about the font, but at least I took some baby steps in coding and managed to make it way bigger than it was with the style template. At any rate, I’ll leave things as they are now till some wag on Reddit or elsewhere rips on the design. Cheers!
